Celebrex Generic Name: Celecoxib
Celebrex is in a new class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) known as "COX-2 inhibitors." Celebrex primarily is used to relieve inflammation and pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It has also been shown to reduce inflammation and pain, just as older NSAIDs such as Naprosyn and Motrin do, by inhibiting the effect of a natural enzyme named COX-2.
Celebrex, unlike some older medications, doesn’t interfere with COX-1 (a similar substance to COX-2) which is known to exert a shielding effect on the lining of the stomach. Due to this fact Celebrex is less likely to cause the ulcers and bleeding which are sometimes associated with long term use of the older NSAIDs. Celebrex is also known to lower the number of colorectal polyps (growths in the wall of the lower intestine and rectum) in people who suffer from a condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). FAP is an inherited tendency to develop large numbers of colorectal polyps which eventually become cancerous.

Celebrex is commonly used to treat the symptoms of arthritis, such as joint pain, inflammation, swelling and stiffness. Prescription Celebrex isn't a cure for arthritis – it provides relief from the symptoms only as long as a patient continues to take the medication.
