Celebrex Warnings

Do not consume alcohol at the same time as taking Celebrex, as the combination can produce stomach problems.

If you are using Celebrex for an extended period of time your physician should monitor your progress on a regular basis.

Reactions with other medications:

  • Taking two or more nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) together on a regular basis may increase the likelihood of side effects.
  • If you are taking acetaminophen, aspirin or another ketorolac or salicylates on a regular basis while taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug there may be an extra chance of side effects.
These increased risks are dependant on the dosage of each drug taken each day and for the length of time you take the drugs at the same time.

If your health care professional directs you to take these medications together on a regular basis, ensure you follow his or her directions carefully. However, do not take acetaminophen or aspirin or other salicylates together with this medicine for more than a few days, and do not take any ketorolac (e.g., Toradol) while you are taking this medicine, unless your physician has directed you to do so and is monitoring your progress.

Warning Signs

Serious side effects can occur during treatment with this Celebrex medication and can occur without prior warning. Usually warning signs occur before a serious side effect occurs include the following:

  • swelling of the face, fingers, feet, and/or lower legs;
  • severe stomach pain,
  • black, tarry stools,
  • vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds;
  • unusual weight gain;

If you notice any of these symptoms you should stop taking this drug immediately and consult with your physician.

Additionally, check with your physician immediately if you experience any of the following after taking Celebrex: fever, drowsiness, itching of the skin, tiredness, nausea, or stomach pain occurs. These symptoms may be an indication of liver toxicity.

Allergy Warnings

The use of this drug may cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This allergy is rare and usually only occurs in patients who are allergic to aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or sulfonamide-type drugs. This allergic reaction requires immediate medical attention! The most serious symptoms of this allergy are fast and/or irregular breathing, gasping for breath, wheezing, or fainting. Further signs could include changes in skin color, very fast but irregular heartbeat or pulse, hive-like swellings on the skin and puffiness or swellings of the eyelids or around the eyes.

If any of these symptoms occur, seek immediate medical attention. Call an ambulance, or have another person drive you. DO NOT drive yourself to the hospital. If you have to wait for medical attention, lie down, cover yourself to keep warm, and elevate your feet higher than your head.

Celebrex, Pregnancy and Breast Feeding

Studies of Celebrex and pregnant women have not been tested; there is a chance this medicine may cause unintentional side effects on the heart or blood flow of the fetus or newborn baby. Ensure your physician knows if you are pregnant or have become pregnant before taking Celebrex prescription drugs.

Celebrex may cause side effects in nursing babies. Make sure your physician is aware you are breast-feeding before taking this drug.
